COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Ecology and Environmental Biology degree at Essex provides a comprehensive foundation in the study of life across multiple levels, from genes and individual organisms to populations, communities, and entire ecosystems. In the first year, students gain essential knowledge in core areas such as cell and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, and ecology, alongside transferable skills and practical experience in laboratory and field settings. The second year builds on this foundation with compulsory modules in ecological theory, data analysis, and specialized topics such as plant and animal ecology, while offering optional modules that allow students to explore areas of personal interest. In the final year, students undertake a major research project, applying the skills and knowledge they have developed to real-world questions in ecology and environmental biology. Additional compulsory modules focus on advanced ecological concepts and field-based learning, providing hands-on experience in diverse environments. Optional modules in the final year further allow students to specialize in areas such as conservation, ecosystem management, or environmental monitoring. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on understanding the impacts of human activities and global change on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
