COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy course at Essex is a structured three-year program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience required for professional practice in oral healthcare. In the first year, students are introduced to clinical practice, foundational sciences, dental public health, and lifelong professional skills, establishing a solid grounding in both practical and theoretical aspects of dentistry. The second year builds on this foundation with advancing clinical practice, critical appraisal and research skills, holistic management of patients with complex needs, and management of oral and dental diseases, enabling students to apply their knowledge in more complex clinical situations. The final year focuses on extending clinical practice and developing research skills in practice, while also providing specialized training in restorative and paediatric dental therapy. Throughout the course, students gain extensive hands-on experience working with patients, developing essential competencies in patient care, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making. The curriculum is carefully designed to integrate practical, theoretical, and research elements, ensuring that graduates are fully prepared for registration with the General Dental Council and a successful career as a Dental Care Professional.
