COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biotechnology program at Essex provides a comprehensive education in the principles and applications of biotechnology, combining molecular and cell biology with practical training in laboratory and research techniques. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules covering quantitative methods for the life sciences, molecular cell biology, genetics and evolution, microbiology, plant biology and ecosystems, biochemistry of macromolecules, general and organic chemistry, and transferable skills essential for scientific research. This grounding equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand complex biological systems and prepare for more specialized study. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied areas, including molecular biology, plant molecular physiology and genetics, and microbial diversity and biotechnology, alongside modules aimed at enhancing employability. Optional modules allow students to tailor their degree to their interests and explore emerging areas within the field. The final year emphasizes independent research and advanced applications of biotechnology, with compulsory modules in microbial biotechnology for sustainable development and plant biotechnology, supported by a substantial research project. Optional modules enable further specialization. Throughout the degree, students gain hands-on experience, engage with current research, and develop practical and analytical skills that prepare them for careers in biotechnology, agriculture, healthcare, environmental management, or further academic study.
