COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biomedical Science at Essex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human health and disease through a combination of core scientific disciplines and practical laboratory experience. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge across molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, and physiology, alongside essential skills in laboratory techniques and data analysis. This broad grounding equips students to explore the complexities of biological systems and the molecular basis of disease. In the second year, the program advances into more specialized areas, including pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms, immunology, cell pathology, haematology, and the study of genetic and neurological disorders, while also emphasizing practical laboratory competence and research methodology. The final year focuses on integrating knowledge through an independent research project, allowing students to apply their learning to real-world biomedical questions, develop critical analysis skills, and gain hands-on experience in experimental design, data interpretation, and problem-solving. Optional modules provide flexibility to pursue specific interests, preparing students for diverse careers in healthcare, clinical laboratories, biomedical research, and the pharmaceutical industry.
