COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biological Sciences at Essex provides a broad and flexible foundation in the study of living organisms, combining molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological perspectives. In the first year, students gain core knowledge across essential areas such as cell and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, physiology, and biochemistry, supported by practical laboratory and field-based learning. Options allow students to tailor their studies to their individual interests while developing key analytical and research skills. In the second year, students continue building on this foundation, with compulsory modules and a wide range of optional courses that enable specialisation in areas of interest, such as molecular biology, ecology, conservation, or integrative biology. The curriculum emphasises hands-on learning, critical thinking, and the application of modern biological techniques, preparing students for independent research and problem-solving.
