COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biochemistry program at Essex provides a comprehensive foundation in the chemical and molecular processes of life, preparing students for careers in research, medicine, and biotechnology. In the first year, students develop essential knowledge across a broad range of subjects including quantitative methods for life sciences, molecular cell biology, microbiology, general and organic chemistry, genetics and evolution, biochemistry of macromolecules, and inorganic and physical chemistry. In addition, transferable skills in life sciences are introduced to equip students with key practical and analytical competencies. The second year builds on this foundation with more advanced study in molecular biology, cell biology, genome science, metals in biotechnology, protein bioinformatics, and proteins and macromolecular assemblies, alongside dedicated employability skills for the biosciences. Students also have the flexibility to choose specific modules that align with their interests. In the third year, students undertake a substantial research project, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge to experimental work and develop independence in scientific investigation. Core modules in structural and molecular enzymology and biomembranes and bioenergetics provide advanced insight into the functioning of biological systems at a molecular level. Optional modules allow further specialization and exploration of contemporary biochemistry topics. Across all three years, the program emphasizes a balance of theoretical understanding, practical laboratory skills, and analytical thinking, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for professional and academic opportunities.
