COURSE CURRICULUM

The accounting degree at Essex is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive education in accounting, finance, and management. In the first year, students are introduced to core concepts through modules such as Introduction to Accounting I and II, Quantitative Methods and Finance, Introduction to Finance, and Introduction to Management. These are complemented by modules in Business Economics, Understanding Value and Values, and Professional and Academic Development, which build foundational skills in analysis, critical thinking, and professional practice. The second year advances into technical and applied knowledge with Financial Reporting and Analysis I and II, Management Accounting I and II, and Corporate Finance, ensuring students develop expertise in both financial and management accounting. Career Management and Professional Development is embedded to support employability, while optional modules allow students to explore specialist interests. In the final year, the curriculum emphasizes advanced and critical perspectives with modules such as Current Issues in Financial Reporting, Advanced Management Accounting, Debates in Public, Social and Environmental Accounting, and Corporate and Business Law. Students also select from research or practice-based options and additional electives to tailor their learning.
