COURSE CURRICULUM

The first-year curriculum for the BSc Oral Health Science course at Essex provides a structured and comprehensive foundation in the theory and practice of oral healthcare. Students undertake a series of core modules designed to develop both their academic knowledge and practical skills. Key modules include HS740-6, which focuses on essential clinical and professional principles, and HS741-6, which builds on these foundations to enhance students’ understanding of patient care and health sciences. Complementary modules, HS742-6 and HS743-6, offer practical learning opportunities, providing zero-credit placements or lab work that allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. These experiences help students develop clinical competencies, professional judgment, and effective communication skills essential for working with patients. Additional core modules such as HS744-6 and HS747-6 further expand students’ knowledge, covering advanced aspects of oral health science, patient management, and clinical practice. Across all modules, students are encouraged to engage with evidence-based approaches, reflective practice, and professional standards. The combination of classroom-based learning, practical sessions, and placements ensures that students gain a well-rounded understanding of the oral healthcare field, preparing them for subsequent years of study, clinical practice, and eventual registration as Dental Therapists with the General Dental Council.
