COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng Mechatronic Systems course at Essex provides a comprehensive education in the design, analysis, and implementation of complex mechatronic systems that integrate mechanics, electronics, computing, and control. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in programming, digital systems, electronics, object-oriented programming, and mathematics, complemented by team-based projects that develop practical problem-solving skills. The second year expands on this foundation with advanced topics such as sensors and actuators, digital systems design, robotics, control theory, embedded systems programming in C, and engineering mathematics, alongside continued team project work and optional modules that allow for specialization. The third year focuses on independent and applied learning through an individual capstone project, as well as courses in mechatronic design and mobile robotics, giving students the opportunity to integrate their knowledge and skills into real-world applications. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience, develop analytical and programming capabilities, and learn to design intelligent systems capable of automation and advanced functionality. Essex’s School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering emphasizes creativity, experimentation, and technical excellence, preparing graduates to become innovative, focused, and adaptable engineers capable of designing and developing the advanced technologies that drive modern industry, robotics, and consumer products.
