COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Language with Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Essex provides a comprehensive program for students interested in both understanding language and developing professional teaching skills. In the first year, students study the foundations of language and TEFL methodology, explore theory and practice in English language teaching, and have the opportunity to begin learning a modern language at either beginners or intermediate level. This is complemented by careers and employability training to prepare students for professional development. In the second year, students engage in initial teaching practice, gaining hands-on experience in language instruction, while also studying research methods for language and linguistics and continuing language learning through elective modules. Year three is dedicated to a full-year abroad module, offering immersive teaching and language experiences that deepen both cultural and linguistic understanding. In the final year, students study advanced topics such as literature and film in language teaching and cognitive linguistics for second language learning, alongside optional language modules at mastery or intermediate levels. The course is designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills, producing graduates who are equipped to teach English in diverse contexts, pursue global careers, and apply critical thinking, research, and language expertise in professional environments.
