COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year English Language with a Modern Language course at Essex provides an in-depth study of contemporary English alongside the opportunity to develop proficiency in an additional language. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with core modules covering the human speech system, the study of language, words and sentences, and sociolinguistics, alongside optional intensive language courses for beginners or intermediate learners. This establishes essential knowledge of linguistic principles and communication skills. In the second year, students focus on research methods for language and linguistics while choosing from English Language and modern language options at post-beginners or advanced levels, allowing them to tailor their studies to individual interests and career goals. The third year is dedicated to a full-year abroad module worth 120 credits, providing immersive language learning and cultural experience that enhances global competence and fluency. In the final year, students return to advanced English language and language mastery modules while continuing to select optional courses to further refine their expertise. Careers and employability skills modules are integrated throughout the program to prepare students for professional opportunities.
