COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Latin American Studies with Human Rights and a Year Abroad program provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of Latin America, its societies, cultures, politics, and human rights issues. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules on human rights, United States sociology, and introductory Latin American studies, while also developing essential academic skills. The second year expands this understanding with core modules on human rights, regional systems, and global challenges, as well as the study of America’s role in the world and key social issues such as race, class, and gender. Students also choose options to tailor their studies, integrating Latin American-focused subjects and interdisciplinary coursework. The third year is dedicated entirely to a study abroad experience, immersing students in the region to gain firsthand cultural, linguistic, and academic insight. In the fourth year, students complete a capstone module alongside advanced modules on human rights and regional studies, while optional modules allow for specialization in areas of personal interest, including Latin American politics, culture, and society. Throughout the program, students develop critical research, analytical, and language skills, particularly in Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese, and gain the ability to assess complex social, political, and human rights issues. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in international relations, human rights advocacy, research, and roles requiring deep regional expertise and global perspectives.
