COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History of Art with Modern Languages at Essex is a four-year interdisciplinary program that integrates the study of art history with language acquisition, offering an opportunity for a year abroad to immerse in another culture. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through compulsory modules such as Writing and Researching Art History and Art and Ideas I, while also beginning or continuing their study of a modern language at various levels. Optional modules allow further exploration of art history or complementary subjects, and the Beyond the BA module provides career and professional development support. The second year builds on this foundation with Art and Ideas II and additional art history and language modules, enabling students to deepen their critical understanding of visual culture while advancing language proficiency. The third year is dedicated to a full-year abroad module, allowing students to study at a partner institution and gain immersive cultural and linguistic experience. In the fourth year, students complete Art and Ideas III and a Capstone project in art history, curating, or heritage, alongside optional advanced language modules or further art history study. Across the program, students gain analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in museums, galleries, heritage, education, research, or further study, while combining expertise in art history with cultural and linguistic competence.
