COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language with Teaching English as a Foreign Language course at Essex is designed to provide students with both academic knowledge of English and practical skills for teaching English in a variety of contexts. In the first year, students study foundational modules covering the structure and use of English, language in society, and linguistics, alongside core language modules and optional language study. These modules build essential knowledge of how English functions and how people acquire and use it. In the second year, students advance to more specialised topics such as applied linguistics, language teaching methodology, and the study of English in different social and cultural contexts, while also having the opportunity to choose from optional modules in linguistics or additional languages. The program balances theoretical study with practical training to ensure students are prepared for professional teaching roles. In the third year, students complete core advanced modules and a range of optional TEFL, linguistics, or language modules, allowing them to focus on areas of interest and gain hands-on teaching experience. Throughout the course, students receive continuous training in employability and professional skills, including the opportunity to earn a stand-alone TEFL qualification. Graduates leave with a strong understanding of English, linguistic principles, and practical teaching expertise suitable for both domestic and international careers.
