COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology, Politics, and Economics program at Essex is a three-year course designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of social, political, and economic systems and their interactions. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules including The Sociological Imagination, Introduction to Economics, and Introduction to Politics, complemented by the compulsory Unlocking Your Academic Potential module and optional modules that allow exploration of additional interests. The second year focuses on expanding and specializing knowledge, with students selecting optional modules from sociology, economics, and politics according to their interests, while also completing the compulsory Career Development and Making a Difference module to enhance practical and professional skills. The third year emphasizes contemporary social issues through the core module Current Issues in Social Science, alongside optional modules in sociology, economics, and politics, enabling students to tailor their studies to specific areas of focus. Across all three years, the program integrates theoretical understanding with practical skills, encouraging critical thinking, research, and analysis of complex societal issues. Students develop the ability to connect insights from multiple disciplines to better understand the dynamics of society, governance, and the economy. The course prepares graduates for careers in public policy, international organizations, research, and related fields, equipping them to address contemporary social, political, and economic challenges.
