COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Social Change degree at Essex offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing contemporary social issues, combining theoretical study with practical engagement. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through core modules such as The Sociological Imagination, Foundations of Human Rights, Interdisciplinary Research and Problem-Solving, and Ways of Knowing, while also having the opportunity to explore optional modules across a variety of subjects. This year equips students with critical thinking and analytical skills, alongside the essential academic and professional abilities developed in the Beyond the BA module. In the second year, the curriculum deepens with The World in Question, examining the social, cultural, political, and environmental legacies of the Enlightenment, and a module on Social Entrepreneurs, Sustainability and Community Action, which provides practical experience in tackling societal challenges. Students further tailor their studies through core-with-options and optional modules, allowing them to explore areas aligned with their interests. The final year focuses on advanced interdisciplinary application, with a capstone module, Dangerous Ideas, that develops critical essays and manifestos as tools for social critique, and a Community Engagement project that provides real-world experience. Additional core-with-options and optional modules allow students to specialise further. The program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to become effective leaders of social change.
