COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Philosophy course at Essex provides a comprehensive and flexible program that develops critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and a deep understanding of philosophical traditions and contemporary issues. In the first year, students build a foundation through the compulsory Introduction to Philosophy module, while also selecting optional modules from humanities or other subjects, alongside a skills module designed to support personal and professional development. The second year deepens knowledge with core modules such as Rationalists and Empiricists, Ethics, Texts in Practical Philosophy, and Reading Texts from the History of Philosophy, while offering a range of optional modules that allow students to focus on areas of particular interest. Interdisciplinary options, including computing modules combined with philosophy, provide opportunities to apply philosophical thinking in broader contexts. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through a Philosophy Capstone Module, allowing them to undertake an in-depth, independent project, alongside optional modules that enable further specialization and exploration of advanced topics. Throughout the course, students engage with both historical and contemporary philosophical ideas, covering areas such as ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of religion, and European thought, and develop transferable skills in argumentation, analysis, and research. The program prepares graduates for careers in academia, law, public service, and other fields requiring critical and reflective thinking.
