COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Philosophy and Human Rights degree at Essex provides students with a comprehensive grounding in both philosophical thought and human rights, emphasizing the connections between ethical, political, social, and legal perspectives. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules such as Introduction to Philosophy and Foundations of Human Rights, alongside optional courses in psychology or other relevant areas, developing critical thinking and analytical skills. In the second year, the focus expands to include Ethics, Modern Social and Political Thought, and Human Rights, Regional Systems & Global Challenges, enabling students to explore moral reasoning, social theory, and the practical application of human rights in global contexts. Optional modules allow further specialization in philosophy or related disciplines, while a core module integrates research and practical skills. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through the Philosophy Capstone Module, Contemporary Political Philosophy, and Selected Issues in Human Rights, providing opportunities to investigate complex ethical and political dilemmas, analyze human rights issues, and develop independent research. Additional philosophy options enable students to tailor their studies to their interests. Graduates of the program acquire the intellectual tools to engage critically with questions of justice, equality, and human dignity, preparing them for careers in human rights advocacy, policy, research, and roles that require strong analytical, ethical, and communication skills.
