COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and Politics course at Essex combines rigorous study of both disciplines, providing students with a strong foundation in philosophical reasoning and political analysis. In the first year, students develop essential skills through compulsory modules such as Introduction to Philosophy and Introduction to Politics, alongside optional modules that allow them to tailor their studies and a skills module, Beyond the BA: Skills for the Next Step, supporting personal and professional development. The second year deepens understanding through core modules including Principles of Social Justice, Modern Social and Political Thought, and Ethics and Public Policy, while offering optional modules and interdisciplinary opportunities, including philosophy or computing modules, to broaden perspectives. These modules focus on ethical reasoning, political concepts, and the application of philosophical frameworks to contemporary issues. In the final year, students explore advanced topics such as Contemporary Political Philosophy and undertake the Philosophy Capstone Module, which enables independent, in-depth research and synthesis of learning from previous years. Additional optional modules in politics and philosophy allow for specialization and interdisciplinary study. Across all three years, the course equips students with critical thinking, analytical, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in public policy, government, law, academia, and other fields that require careful evaluation of ethical, political, and philosophical issues.
