COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and Law degree offers a structured progression that integrates the study of legal systems with philosophical thought. In the first year, students build a foundation through compulsory modules in Criminal Law, Public Law, and Introduction to Philosophy, alongside an optional philosophy or outside module, supported by skills development through Beyond the BA. The second year deepens legal knowledge with Contract Law and further law options, while also expanding philosophical study through modules such as ethics, political theory, or specialist philosophy options, complemented by interdisciplinary choices that connect law and philosophy. This stage encourages students to engage critically with legal principles and philosophical frameworks, examining how ideas about justice, rights, and morality shape and challenge the law. In the final year, students refine their expertise by selecting advanced law options and engaging with key philosophical debates in Contemporary Political Philosophy. The Philosophy Capstone module consolidates their learning, allowing them to demonstrate critical analysis and independent thought. Additional optional modules provide scope for further specialisation in either discipline, such as applied philosophy or advanced legal subjects. Overall, the course develops intellectual versatility, analytical skills, and the ability to connect abstract theory with practical legal issues, preparing graduates for diverse professional and academic pathways.
