COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Philosophy and History course provides a structured and interdisciplinary study of both fields, allowing students to explore the connections between philosophical thought and historical inquiry. In the first year, students engage with core modules including an introduction to philosophy and Rebellious Pasts: Challenging and Creating Histories, which together establish the analytical, critical, and research skills needed for both disciplines. Optional modules allow students to pursue additional areas of interest, including topics in psychology or other subjects, providing a broad academic foundation. In the second year, students continue to develop their historical research skills through the Exploring History: Research Workshop module, while also selecting from a range of optional modules in philosophy and history, including recommended modules in advanced philosophical study. These choices allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests, exploring issues such as political philosophy, ethics, culture, identity, and historical perspectives on social and political change. In the final year, students complete a Philosophy Capstone Module, which consolidates philosophical understanding and analytical skills, while also choosing final-year history and philosophy options to deepen expertise in their chosen areas. Throughout the degree, students gain the ability to think critically, synthesize complex ideas, and communicate effectively, preparing them for careers in research, education, public policy, or further academic study in philosophy, history, or related fields.
