COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Philosophy and Art History course at Essex offers an integrated study of philosophical thought and visual culture, providing students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation. In the first year, students engage with core modules such as Introduction to Philosophy, Writing and Researching Art History, and Art and Ideas: I, while also having the flexibility to choose options from philosophy, art history, or other disciplines. This allows students to develop critical thinking and analytical skills while exploring the connections between philosophical concepts and visual forms. In the second year, the focus expands to include Rationalists and Empiricists alongside Art and Ideas II, enabling students to explore both historical and theoretical perspectives, while options allow further specialization in philosophy, art history, or related subjects. The curriculum is designed to deepen understanding of how ideas are expressed through art and how visual culture reflects broader intellectual, social, and cultural contexts. In the third year, students complete a capstone project, such as PY455-6-SU or AR382-6-FY, integrating knowledge from both disciplines, and continue with advanced modules in Art and Ideas III and optional philosophy or art history courses. Graduates of the program gain the skills to critically assess and interpret visual and intellectual culture, preparing them for careers in academia, curation, cultural institutions, creative industries, or any field requiring sophisticated analytical and interdisciplinary skills.
