COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern History course at Essex is structured over three years, combining compulsory and optional modules to provide a comprehensive understanding of modern historical developments. In the first year, students begin with Rebellious Pasts: Challenging and Creating Histories, which encourages critical engagement with historical narratives and perspectives. They also choose from core modules such as HR176-4-AU or HR172-4-AU, alongside a range of optional history modules and other academic options, allowing them to tailor their studies to individual interests. The year also includes Beyond the BA: Skills for the Next Step, focusing on developing essential skills for academic and professional success. The second year builds on this foundation through Exploring History: Research Workshop, where students develop research techniques and analytical skills. Optional modules, including additional history options or outside courses, provide further flexibility, while Beyond the BA: Building Career and Employability Readiness prepares students for future career paths. In the final year, students undertake a substantial Research Project, synthesizing knowledge and skills gained throughout the degree. Additional optional modules allow for specialization in areas of personal or academic interest. The course concludes with Beyond the BA: Preparing for Life as a Graduate, ensuring students are equipped with the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence needed for postgraduate study or professional opportunities in fields such as education, heritage, public service, or research.
