COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern History and Politics degree at Essex provides a thorough grounding in both disciplines, examining how historical events and political systems intersect and shape the contemporary world. In the first year, students take core modules in politics, international relations, and modern history, exploring the ideas, cultures, and economic developments of the last 200 years, while also developing essential academic skills. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning according to their interests. In the second year, students advance their understanding through a research workshop in history and compulsory modules in politics, along with further optional modules that offer flexibility to study topics across both fields. The program emphasizes analytical skills, critical thinking, and the methods used to evaluate political and historical phenomena. In the final year, students complete a capstone project, synthesizing knowledge from history and politics, while selecting from a range of advanced modules in both disciplines to pursue their specific interests.
