COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Creative Writing at Essex provides a comprehensive and flexible program that blends literary study with practical writing skills, preparing students for careers in writing, publishing, media, and related fields. In the first year, students establish a solid foundation in literary analysis and creative practice through modules such as Origins and Transformations in Literature and Drama, The Writer's Toolkit, Text Up Close: Reading for Criticism, and Poetry: A Very Short Introduction. These courses introduce students to key literary concepts, critical reading techniques, and the fundamentals of creative writing, while optional modules allow them to explore additional areas of interest. The first year also includes a module designed to support career development, ensuring students begin to consider future pathways in writing and related industries. In the second year, the focus shifts toward developing practical writing skills through modules in Creative Non-Fiction, Writing the Short Story, and Writing Structures, alongside options that allow for specialization and creative experimentation. The third year culminates in advanced modules and final-year projects, enabling students to refine their writing style, complete substantial creative works, and pursue elective topics aligned with their interests.
