COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics degree at Essex is designed to provide students with a thorough grounding in the scientific study of language while offering flexibility to pursue individual interests. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules such as Fundamentals of the Human Speech System, Introduction to the Study of Language, Words and Sentences, and Foundations of Sociolinguistics. Additional modules allow students to choose from options in linguistics or language, enabling them to tailor their learning while developing practical skills through Careers and Employability Skills for Languages and Linguistics. In the second year, the focus shifts to research methods for language and linguistics, alongside compulsory modules that allow students to select from a range of linguistics topics, deepening their understanding of language structures, variation, and use. Optional modules provide further opportunities to explore specialized areas while continuing to develop employability skills. The final year combines advanced theoretical and applied study, with compulsory modules including World Language Structures and options such as LG831 or LG832 to develop expertise in specific areas of linguistics. Students also select additional optional modules to expand their knowledge and specialization. Across all three years, the course emphasizes analytical, critical and practical skills, preparing graduates for careers in research, education, technology, human rights, and other language-focused professions.
