COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics and Modern Languages degree at Essex provides a balanced combination of theoretical linguistics and practical language learning, equipping students with advanced communication skills and global competencies. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through compulsory modules such as Fundamentals of the Human Speech System, Words and Sentences, Introduction to the Study of Language, and Foundations of Sociolinguistics. Alongside these, students choose from language modules at various levels, including intensive beginners or post-A-level options, enabling them to start or continue learning a modern language to a high standard. Careers and Employability Skills for Languages and Linguistics run throughout the program to support professional development. The second year deepens students’ understanding of linguistic analysis through compulsory modules such as Research Methods for Language and Linguistics and LG211 or LG212, while providing opportunities to continue language study at post-beginners or higher levels. Optional modules allow exploration of specialized topics in linguistics or further language study, fostering both analytical and practical skills. In the third year, students consolidate their expertise with advanced linguistics modules, including World Language Structures and LG831 or LG832, while continuing language study to proficiency or intermediate levels, depending on prior experience. Across the program, students develop critical, analytical, and practical skills, combining linguistic theory with applied language knowledge to prepare for careers in global communication, education, research, and international industries.
