COURSE CURRICULUM

The English degree course at Essex provides a comprehensive and structured study of literature, language, and critical analysis across three years, equipping students with advanced skills in reading, writing, and interpretation. In the first year, students undertake seven core modules that introduce them to key areas of English studies, covering foundational concepts in literature, language, and communication, while also developing academic research and analytical skills. These modules establish a solid base in literary analysis, close reading, and the understanding of textual and cultural contexts, ensuring students are well-prepared for more specialized study. In the second year, the curriculum builds on this foundation through another seven compulsory modules, which expand students’ knowledge of English literature and critical theory, while encouraging independent thinking and more sophisticated analytical approaches. Students engage with a variety of texts across historical periods and genres, deepening their appreciation of literary forms, structures, and cultural significance. The third year focuses on advanced study through six compulsory modules, allowing students to consolidate their learning and apply their knowledge to complex literary, linguistic, and cultural analyses.
