COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Film degree combines the study of historical processes with the analysis of film, offering a multidisciplinary approach that develops both critical and practical skills. In the first year, students explore foundational modules in film and media alongside history, such as “Approaches to Film and Media” and “Rebellious Pasts: Challenging and Creating Histories,” while also having the flexibility to choose optional history or other relevant modules. This provides a broad understanding of historical inquiry, narrative construction, and cinematic interpretation. Students are also introduced to essential skills for academic and professional development through career-focused modules. In the second year, the focus shifts to research and applied learning, with compulsory modules like “Exploring History: Research Workshop” supporting the development of research methods and analytical abilities. Optional modules in both history and film allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests, deepening their understanding of historical events, cultural contexts, and film genres. The third year emphasizes independent research and advanced study, with students completing a substantial research project that integrates historical scholarship and film analysis. Optional modules continue to offer specialization in history or film. Throughout the course, students cultivate critical thinking, analytical skills, and practical media experience, preparing them for careers in creative industries, research, curation, or media production while enhancing employability and graduate readiness.
