COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Accounting and Financial Economics course at Essex provides a comprehensive education in both economics and accounting, preparing students for careers in finance, business, and policy. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with modules in economics, finance, quantitative methods, and accounting, alongside optional social science courses and career skills development. The second year advances students’ knowledge with intermediate microeconomics, financial instruments and capital markets, and deeper study in management accounting and financial reporting, allowing them to understand the practical and analytical aspects of financial decision-making. Optional modules provide flexibility to explore areas of personal interest. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics such as current issues in financial reporting, advanced management accounting, debates in public, social and environmental accounting, economic analysis of asset prices, and the economics of financial markets and intermediation. Students also have the option to combine core economics modules with elective courses, enabling them to tailor their studies. Throughout the course, career skills are embedded to ensure graduates are work-ready. The program integrates rigorous theoretical study with practical application, equipping students with quantitative, analytical, and critical thinking skills, and providing a thorough understanding of how economic and financial systems function and affect society.
