COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film and Literature program at Essex provides a comprehensive exploration of cinema, literature, and drama, combining theoretical, historical, and practical approaches to develop both critical thinking and creative skills. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through compulsory modules such as Origins and Transformations in Literature and Drama, Approaches to Film and Media, Text Up Close: Reading for Criticism, and The Humanities Graduate: Future Pathways, while also selecting options from a diverse list or outside modules to tailor their studies. The second year focuses on deepening critical understanding through modules like Criticism: Practice and Theory, alongside additional optional modules that allow students to explore specialized areas of literature, film, and media, integrating theory with broader cultural and historical contexts. In the third year, students complete a Capstone Project that consolidates their learning, providing an opportunity for independent research and advanced critical or creative work, supported by further optional modules to refine expertise and pursue personal interests. Across all three years, the program emphasizes analytical skills, engagement with historical and contemporary texts, and an understanding of media production processes. By combining literature, drama, and film studies, graduates develop the knowledge, practical experience, and transferable skills needed for careers in media, cultural industries, or further academic study.
