COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film and Art History course at Essex provides an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to studying visual culture, film, and art history. In the first year, students build a foundation in art history through modules such as Writing and Researching Art History and Art and Ideas I, while also engaging with film and media through the Approaches to Film and Media module. Students can further tailor their studies with optional film or art history modules, gaining both academic knowledge and practical skills, while a professional skills module, Beyond the BA, prepares them for future careers. In the second year, students deepen their understanding with Art and Ideas II, focusing on critique and historiography, alongside optional modules in art history and film, allowing them to explore a variety of genres, periods, and national cinemas. Students also have the opportunity to develop critical technical skills in filmmaking and production management through practical modules. The third year consolidates knowledge and skills with Art and Ideas III and a Capstone project in Art History, Curating, or Heritage, while optional modules provide further specialization in film and art history. By the end of the degree, students will have developed a comprehensive understanding of visual culture and film, alongside a portfolio of practical work, preparing them for careers in creative industries, media, and curation.
