COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film and Journalism joint honours degree at Essex provides a comprehensive and creative learning experience, combining the study of film and journalism with practical, hands-on training. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules such as Approaches to Film and Media, Introduction to Film Production, Essential Journalism, The Journalistic Imagination, and Practical Podcasting, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the second year, the focus expands to advanced technical and journalistic skills with modules including Audio and Video for Broadcast and Online, Feature Writing and Magazine Journalism, Documentary Filmmaking, and other film or LiFTS options. This combination allows students to develop expertise in film production, investigative journalism, storytelling, and multimedia content creation. In the third year, students consolidate their learning and professional readiness through Advanced Practical Journalism, alongside specialised film or LiFTS modules, and further options from literature, film, and theatre studies, enabling a tailored academic experience. Throughout the program, students engage in both practical and analytical work, applying theory to real-world contexts and developing transferable skills such as research, communication, critical analysis, and creative problem solving. The degree prepares graduates for careers in media, journalism, film production, broadcasting, and other creative industries by combining academic insight with practical, industry-focused experience.
