COURSE CURRICULUM

The European Studies degree provides a structured yet flexible curriculum that combines compulsory modules with a wide range of options, allowing students to shape their learning journey according to their interests. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules such as Interdisciplinary Research and Problem-Solving, Ways of Knowing, and Democracy in Europe and the United States, 1789–1989, alongside introductory historical options and language or European Union-focused electives. The inclusion of Beyond the BA ensures students also gain essential transferable skills for future study or employment. The second year emphasizes greater choice, with optional modules across different disciplines, enabling students to deepen their understanding of European contexts while tailoring their academic focus. Compulsory modules, such as those in computing and research, are balanced with opportunities to continue language study or select from a broad array of EU-related subjects. In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge through advanced optional modules, including those focused on European Union politics, culture, or law, alongside compulsory capstone-style modules that may involve research projects or applied study. By offering interdisciplinary learning, critical engagement with Europe’s past and present, and the chance to enhance language proficiency, the program prepares graduates for diverse academic and professional pathways.
