COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature course at Essex provides a structured yet flexible pathway to studying literature across historical periods, genres, and cultural contexts. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules such as Origins and Transformations in Literature and Drama, which examines key developments in literary history, and Text Up Close: Reading for Criticism, which introduces close reading and analytical techniques. Students also choose from a range of optional modules to tailor their study, while The Humanities Graduate: Future Pathways equips them with essential skills for academic and professional development. The second year deepens literary and critical understanding through modules such as Criticism: Practice and Theory, while offering further options to explore specialized areas of literature, allowing students to focus on themes, genres, or periods that match their interests.
