COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Media Communication degree at Essex provides a comprehensive study of how language functions in society and media, combining theoretical understanding with practical skills. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Fundamentals of the Human Speech System, Words and Sentences, Introduction to the Study of Language, and Foundations of Sociolinguistics. Media-focused learning is introduced through Media, Culture and Society, while additional modules allow students to explore options in related subjects. Careers and Employability Skills for Languages and Linguistics are integrated throughout to support professional development. In the second year, the focus expands to the analysis of sociolinguistic patterns and media communication through modules such as Sociolinguistics, English Language in the Media, Research Methods for Language and Linguistics, and Mass Media and Modern Life. Optional modules provide flexibility to tailor learning to individual interests. In the third year, students engage in advanced study, including Conversation and Social Interaction, Mass Media and Modern Life, and selected modules that allow in-depth exploration of linguistics or media studies. Compulsory options such as LG831 or LG832 further develop specialized skills. Across all three years, the course emphasizes critical thinking, practical application, and analysis of how language shapes public opinion, social interaction, and media discourse, preparing graduates for careers in media, communication, education, and related fields.
