COURSE CURRICULUM

The Essex English Language and Linguistics degree provides a comprehensive study of the structure, use, and development of English as well as general linguistics. In the first year, students take compulsory modules that introduce core areas of linguistics and English language, including the analysis of sound systems, grammar, and sentence structure, while also developing practical skills through language options and project-based learning. These foundational modules are complemented by a career portfolio to support skill development. In the second year, students progress to more advanced study in linguistics and English language, exploring topics such as phonetics, syntax, and sociolinguistics, with opportunities to select options that reflect personal interests. The course continues to emphasise the application of theoretical knowledge to real-world language use, preparing students for practical and research contexts. In the final year, students undertake a capstone project alongside compulsory modules that deepen their understanding of advanced linguistic analysis and English language structure. Additional optional modules allow students to specialise further in areas such as conversation and social interaction, institutional talk, or English around the world.
