COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English and Comparative Literature course at Essex provides a comprehensive study of literature and drama, combining historical, critical, and practical approaches to texts. In the first year, students engage with foundational modules such as Origins and Transformations in Literature and Drama, and Text Up Close: Reading for Criticism, which develop close reading and analytical skills. Students also explore optional modules that allow them to tailor their studies to specific interests, alongside core modules that support professional and academic development, such as The Humanities Graduate: Future Pathways. The second year continues to build on critical and theoretical understanding through modules like Criticism: Practice and Theory, while offering further optional modules to deepen knowledge across periods, genres, and global literatures. Students have the flexibility to select options that align with their focus areas, enabling a personalized and interdisciplinary approach. The final year emphasizes independent scholarship through the Independent Literature Project, allowing students to pursue an in-depth study of a chosen topic, supported by optional modules that further broaden their expertise. Throughout the course, students develop analytical, research, and communication skills, and gain experience engaging with literature in diverse contexts.
