COURSE CURRICULUM

The Theatre Studies course at Essex provides a comprehensive and engaging program that combines practical performance, theoretical study, and critical analysis across three years. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules such as introductory theatre studies, practical workshops, and literature studies, which develop essential skills in performance, analysis, and communication. This year emphasizes understanding theatre history, dramatic literature, and foundational creative practice. In the second year, students expand their expertise through compulsory modules that explore performance-making, contemporary theatre practice, and advanced analysis, alongside options from literature, film, or theatre studies, allowing for academic and creative specialization. This year also introduces collaborative projects and more in-depth research skills to prepare students for professional practice. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through advanced compulsory modules, including a major capstone project, which combines theoretical and practical approaches to theatre studies. Additional modules in performance, theatre-making, and critical analysis refine their understanding of contemporary and historical theatre, while optional modules offer further opportunities for interdisciplinary study across literature and film.
