COURSE CURRICULUM

This interdisciplinary degree combines criminology, sociology, and counselling, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of crime, society, and human behaviour. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules such as Introduction to Crime, Law and Society, Researching Social Life, The Sociological Imagination, and Understanding Individuals, Groups and Organisations, which introduces psychodynamic concepts. Additional modules focus on child, adolescent, and adult development, as well as academic skills through Unlocking Your Academic Potential, equipping students with analytical, research, and interpersonal capabilities. The second year develops specialist skills and deeper theoretical understanding through modules including Race, Class and Gender, Observation Skills for Counselling, New Directions in Criminology, and Madness and its Cure. Students also select optional and methods-based modules, enabling flexibility in their studies, while Career Development and Making a Difference supports professional preparation. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a capstone project, while undertaking advanced modules such as Counselling Skills and Therapeutic Work, Crime, Policy and Social Justice, Psychiatry and Mental Illness, and Globalisation and Crime. Additional optional modules allow further specialisation, and ongoing career development ensures graduates are prepared for employment. This combination of criminology, sociological insight, and counselling practice equips students with practical, analytical, and reflective skills applicable to careers in criminal justice, social policy, counselling, and related fields.
