COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Continental Philosophy at Essex offers a comprehensive and flexible approach to studying philosophy, focusing on existential, social, and political issues that shape human life. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with core modules such as Introduction to Philosophy and Death, God and the Meaning of Life, while also having the option to explore additional subjects that broaden their understanding of philosophical inquiry. The course emphasizes critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and engagement with fundamental questions about existence, ethics, and the human condition. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through modules like Rationalists and Empiricists and Critical Theory, alongside a range of optional courses that allow for specialization and exploration of individual interests. Computational and interdisciplinary elements, including options with computer science, are also available to enhance problem-solving and research skills. The final year culminates in the Philosophy Capstone Module, enabling students to undertake an extensive independent project, while further Continental Philosophy options and other philosophy modules allow for advanced study in areas of personal interest.
