COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Art, Visual and Media Culture at Essex combines the study of art history with an in-depth exploration of media and visual culture, equipping students with the analytical and practical skills to understand the contemporary visual world. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules such as Approaches to Film and Media, Media, Culture and Society, Art and Ideas I, and Writing and Researching Art History, while also having the option to select from additional modules to broaden their perspectives. The program emphasizes critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches, encouraging students to explore a wide range of visual and media forms. In the second year, students build on this foundation with courses including Art and Ideas II and SC224-5-FY, while continuing to select optional art history modules that align with their interests. The third year focuses on synthesizing knowledge through compulsory modules like Mass Media and Modern Life, Art and Ideas III, and the Capstone project in Art History, Curating, or Heritage, allowing students to develop their research, analytical, and practical skills to professional standards. Optional modules and additional project work enable further specialization. The course emphasizes critical engagement with art, film, media, and visual culture, preparing graduates for careers in creative industries, cultural institutions, media, or further academic study.
