COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA American Studies with Film offers a structured yet flexible curriculum across three years, blending the study of US society, history, and culture with film theory and practice. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules such as Approaches to Film and Media, Interdisciplinary Research and Problem-Solving, Introduction to United States Literature, Ways of Knowing, and Introduction to United States Sociology, alongside film options and training in academic and career development skills. The second year expands on this base with America and the World and further interdisciplinary study, while also allowing choice between core cultural studies modules and a range of American and film options. This flexibility encourages exploration of US history, politics, and culture in different disciplines, as well as practical and theoretical engagement with film. In the final year, students spend the autumn term abroad in the United States, immersing themselves in American culture while earning credits through study abroad options. On return, they continue with advanced modules in US Studies and Film, and complete a capstone project, choosing from interdisciplinary, cultural, or dissertation pathways. The program balances academic rigor, critical analysis, and creative practice, fostering well-rounded graduates prepared for diverse careers.
