COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Acting and Community Engagement degree provides a structured pathway that combines acting training with applied theatre practice and community engagement. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in acting through modules such as Acting Theory and Practice, Verbatim Theatre, Actor and Text, and Improvised Living History, while also developing technical skills in voice, movement, music, and singing. Contextual and Community Studies introduce the broader social frameworks within which theatre operates. The second year deepens engagement with community-focused practice through Applied Theatre Skills I and II, which emphasize consulting and developing communities, alongside training in Community Theatre Arts Management, Technical Theatre Skills, and Special Performance Skills. This year provides students with practical tools for designing and managing community projects while broadening their performance repertoire. In the final year, students specialize in areas where theatre intersects with wellbeing, social care, and criminal justice, as well as site-specific and digital political or historical projects. Modules in Arts Administration and Professional Development ensure readiness for the professional world, while the Community Project offers a capstone experience to apply knowledge and skills in a real-world context. This progression equips graduates to become versatile, socially engaged theatre practitioners.
