ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Essex, founded by royal charter in 1965, is a public research university located in Essex, England, with campuses in Colchester, Southend-on-Sea, and Loughton. Recognized as one of the original plate glass universities, Essex has built a reputation for academic excellence and diversity, with a student body drawn from across the world and partnerships with over 100 global institutions. It was named University of the Year by the Times Higher Education Awards in 2018, and its Department of Government was honored with a Regius Professorship by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. The university has twice received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its contributions to human rights and social and economic research. In the 2025 rankings, Essex placed 30th in the Complete University Guide, 23rd in The Guardian University Guide, and 46th in The Sunday Times rankings. Its alumni include Nobel laureates, political leaders, and influential figures in various fields. The idea for the university emerged in 1959 when Essex County Council approved a proposal led by Baron Charles Leatherland, with Wivenhoe Park ultimately chosen as the site. R. A. Butler became the first chancellor, and Albert Sloman the first vice-chancellor. Early academic appointments in 1963 laid the foundation for departments in physics, sociology, literature, government, and economics. Fundraising efforts, supported by figures such as The Queen Mother and Winston Churchill, exceeded expectations and enabled rapid construction of facilities. The university welcomed its first 122 students in 1964, with numbers quickly rising, and by 1966, new departments, residential towers, and the library were established. Essex became a focal point for student activism, particularly during the global wave of protests in 1968, when demonstrations against political figures and controversial research drew national attention. Despite these turbulent beginnings, the university steadily expanded and solidified its role as a center of academic innovation and critical inquiry, maintaining its distinctive motto, “Thought the harder, heart the keener.”
