COURSE CURRICULUM

This teacher training course combines academic research, subject-specific development, and school-based experience to prepare trainee teachers for the demands of secondary education. The Active Enquiry and Intervention: Impacting upon Learner Progress module develops trainees’ abilities in critical thinking, reflective practice, and educational research. Through action research, trainees design and implement a classroom intervention based on reading and evidence, evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies, and adapt their approaches to meet the needs of diverse learners. The module promotes a strong foundation in evidence-informed teaching and the use of educational scholarship to guide classroom decisions.The Developing Subject Expertise and Subject Specialism module focuses on deepening knowledge in the trainee’s chosen subject area. Trainees are encouraged to identify specific areas for improvement and apply strategies to build their subject expertise. The module explores the impact of pedagogical approaches on learning, helping trainees select and implement teaching methods that are appropriate to their educational setting. Reflective practice plays a key role, enabling trainees to evaluate and refine their teaching for future improvement.The School-Based Learning: Reflections on Practice (Mental Wealth) module offers real-world teaching experience in a secondary school setting, supported by a mentor. Trainees apply academic theory in practice, respond to curriculum developments, and learn to support students’ learning and development effectively. This module ensures that trainees gain the professional skills required to meet the Teachers’ Standards for Qualified Teacher Status, while also fostering an understanding of current best practices in secondary education.These core modules are complemented by Research Informed Practice, which underpins the course with a strong emphasis on using educational research to inform and improve teaching. Together, the modules provide a well-rounded program that equips future educators with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to make a positive impact in the classroom.
