COURSE CURRICULUM

The teacher training program is designed to foster the development of effective, reflective educators through a combination of practical experience, subject expertise, and research-informed teaching practices. The School-Based Learning: Reflections on Practice module offers trainees an initial experience of teaching in a secondary school environment, guided by an experienced mentor. The module emphasizes current best practices in secondary education, helping students understand key issues in teaching and curriculum design. Through this hands-on experience, trainees work towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards for Qualified Teacher Status and learn how to effectively support children’s learning and development in the classroom.The Active Enquiry and Intervention: Impacting Upon Learner Progress module focuses on developing critical thinking, reflective practice, and a deep understanding of educational research. Trainee teachers are introduced to action research and are encouraged to carry out a classroom intervention, informed by scholarly reading and research activity. This process helps trainees apply evidence-based teaching strategies and reflect critically on their interventions, fostering an appreciation of the importance of using research and scholarship to enhance learning and teaching.The Developing Subject Expertise and Subject Specialism module enables trainees to strengthen their subject knowledge and teaching strategies. Trainees identify areas within their subject where further development is needed and work to improve their expertise. The module also explores the impact of pedagogy on student learning and introduces various pedagogical models. Trainees are tasked with developing a tailored pedagogic approach that is contextually relevant, and they reflect on their practice to make modifications or adaptations for future lessons.Together, these core modules create a comprehensive program that balances theory, research, and practical teaching experience. Trainees are equipped to meet the diverse needs of students, apply evidence-based strategies, and continuously improve their teaching practice throughout their careers.
