COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc program in Sustainable Tourism Development is designed to cultivate a critical understanding of tourism's evolving role in addressing global sustainability challenges. At its foundation is the Mental Wealth: The Tourism Professional module, which deepens students' appreciation of current issues in the tourism sector while fostering self-awareness in leadership, research, and academic skills. This module encourages a proactive approach to sustainable destination management, policymaking, and responsible tourism leadership, preparing students to navigate a rapidly changing global industry. The course also includes Destination Governance and Tourism Planning for Resilience and Sustainability, which examines policy, planning, and governance strategies needed to support steady-state tourism economies and regenerative practices. Emphasis is placed on decarbonisation and long-term resilience, equipping students to influence public administration and strategic planning in tourism. The module on Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Regenerative Tourism Economies explores how global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have redefined tourism. It focuses on the emergence of inclusive, green business models and encourages students to think critically and creatively about entrepreneurship in the context of sustainable development. Culture, Heritage and Creativity in Tourism broadens students’ understanding of tourism's role in cultural identity and place-making. It addresses the management of arts, culture, and heritage assets, encouraging exploration of rural and urban settings as tourism products. The module highlights the importance of storytelling and digital innovation in engaging diverse audiences and fostering inclusive growth. The program culminates with a Research Dissertation, offering students the opportunity to investigate a specific issue within sustainable tourism through primary or secondary data. This module reinforces independent research skills and enables students to contribute meaningfully to tourism scholarship and practice. Collectively, these core modules offer a comprehensive foundation for future tourism professionals to lead with insight, creativity, and a commitment to sustainability.
