COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Data Science at the University of East London is a methodology-oriented program designed for students who wish to understand and apply data science concepts across various professional sectors. While there is some overlap with computer science, this program focuses less on software development and more on the design, development, and management of data-driven solutions and products. It aims to equip students with the practical and analytical tools needed to conduct complex data projects, emphasising data analysis, modelling, and decision-making rather than coding-intensive system design.The curriculum is structured around key modules that cover the entire data lifecycle. In Term 2, students take Advanced Decision Making and Spatial Data Analysis, developing skills in predictive analytics, machine learning, and geospatial techniques using open-source platforms. In Term 1, students explore Data Ecology, focusing on the broader environment in which data is produced, shared, and consumed in the Industry 4.0 economy, alongside Quantitative Data Analysis, which strengthens their statistical and analytical capabilities. These modules are complemented by a major independent project—the Data Science Dissertation—which allows students to apply their learning through either practical industry-focused evaluations or an in-depth academic research project.The program structure includes two intensive weeks of teaching at the start of each term, followed by weekly three-hour sessions for each module, ensuring consistent academic engagement and compliance with visa regulations. Online learners follow a similar structure with variation in the dissertation component, focusing solely on an extended academic research project.Overall, this MSc offers a well-rounded, interdisciplinary approach to data science, ideal for students looking to gain a deep methodological understanding of data-driven work in real-world settings, while also being prepared for the expectations of modern data-centric workplaces.
