COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology provides a comprehensive and hands-on educational experience, designed to prepare students for successful careers within the sports science and health sectors. Through a combination of theoretical modules, practical training, and work-based learning, this program enables students to build an advanced understanding of the physiological principles underpinning performance and health, while also gaining critical real-world experience.The course includes the Sport and Exercise Work-Based Learning module, which helps students apply their knowledge in a professional environment. Supported by a dedicated placements team and UEL’s network of industry partnerships, students are matched with placements aligned to their career goals, enabling them to develop technical and employability skills in live settings. This real-world experience is complemented by the Applying Research Skills module, which teaches research design, methodology, and statistical analysis, preparing students for their final dissertation.The 120-credit Sport Research Project represents a major component of the degree, offering students the opportunity to investigate a topic of personal and professional interest within the field of strength and conditioning. Under the supervision of academic staff, students engage in original research, demonstrating the integration of theory, method, and application.Theoretical grounding is provided by the Theory of Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology module, which covers the physiological responses to exercise and training. Topics include training thresholds, environmental challenges, and exercise as a tool for disease prevention. This is supported by academic skill development, including critical analysis and scientific writing.To ensure practical readiness, students also undertake the Advanced Practice module, where they develop and refine their laboratory skills, including assessments of oxygen uptake and lactate threshold. Through rigorous training in data collection and client feedback, students learn to operate confidently and professionally in applied settings.
